Oppo A37 unveiled with decent specs and affordable price

Oppo’s entry-level A-series has just gotten larger through the addition of the Oppo A37, a smartphone offers a lot of value at an affordable price. The manufacturer says that the new Oppo A37 will be priced at around $199, although the exact pricing will vary by market.

The Oppo A37 comes with a 5-inch IPS LCD display running a resolution of 720 by 1280 pixels. The display comes with rounded glass and is protected by a layer of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4. Since this is an entry-level phone, we’re not going to complain about the relatively low resolution of the display.

The brain of the Oppo A37 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 SoC. This is an entry level chipset that should suffice for basic tasks when paired with 2GB of RAM. The handset also comes with 16GB of integrated storage space, but users can expand on that by up to 128GB using the microSD card slot. Speaking of slots, the Oppo A37 comes with a triple-card slot that allows the simultaneous usage of two nanoSIMs as well as a microSD card.

Oppo puts a lot of emphasis on the photography skills of the new Oppo A37. The imaging hardware consists out of an 8MP primary sensor with large 1.4μm pixels and an f/2.2 lens as well as a 5MP selfie sensor on the front paired with an f/2.4 lens. That’s a decent camera setup for an entry-level smartphone, but not something to drool after.

Keeping the lights on is a 2,630mAh battery that should provide decent battery life given the low power consumption of the internal hardware.

On the software side, the Oppo A37 sadly runs Android 5.1 Lollipop with Oppo’s proprietary ColorOS 3.0 on top. We would have loved to see the phone running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, but this is a drawback that we’re going to have to live with.

The Oppo A37 is already available for purchase in Singapore at a price of $215. Oppo says that other markets will get the phone in the upcoming weeks, but we wouldn’t count on the phone ever reaching the US through official channels.
